The fundamental teachings of yoga are based on the practice of being uncomfortable, which is a powerful lesson we can all benefit from.
We’re wired to take the path of least resistance. But what if you made a conscious effort to take the difficult route?
Think of your comfort zone as a form of attachment. It’s impossible to grow when you’re attached to living the same life day after day. Here are a few ways yoga can help teach you how to leave your comfort zone.
Yoga is all about living in the present. It’s about learning not to dwell on the past or worry about the future, only to enjoy the here and now. This is evident to yogis who have after months of practice nailed a pose only to be off again the next day. Learning to accept the way things are in the present moment will help you not freak out when things do not go your way.
The challenge to breathe, focus, and balance all at the same time forces you to quiet the mind and push you outside your comfort zone. There’s no way to hold a balancing pose while worrying about what-ifs. This process helps you learn how to thrive under pressure.
In yoga, there’s always something better to strive for. Finding stillness in a pose, achieving enough strength to master another, etc. There are so many things in yoga you can improve on that you won’t bother with if you’re inside your comfort zone.
No practice is ever the same. Each time you repeat a pose, you experience a new form of physical and mental dynamics, making the experience different every time.
What you learn on your yoga mat will ease your transition of leaving your comfort zone off the mat. No matter what level of fitness you’re at, there’s a practice out there for you. Leave behind whatever notions you have about yoga and just give it a try. You may be surprised by what you learn.
