I’m in Bastrop, TX for my cousin’s wedding. This cousin is the youngest of the 7 cousins on my mom’s side and is about the age I was when I got married. I rode in with my grandma, mom, and step-dad. On the long drive I reflected on what wisdom I could potentially impart on this young couple just starting out their life together.
I am grateful for every experience that has made me who I am today, but of course occasionally everyone thinks about what might have been different if you had known “then” what you know now. So I thought that today I would share some of the things I wish I had realized earlier in life and am grateful to know now.
You are the author of your story. Everyone you admire that has achieved something you want for yourself is also just a human being. Examine yourself, learn what you want, believe you can have it, educate yourself on how to achieve it and then execute intentionally.
Love yourself. Have boundaries and clearly communicate them. You have the right to distance yourself from anyone that disrespects those boundaries. Your feelings are valid and matter.
Your mindset matters and is within your control. An abundance mindset and positive approach to life changes everything. Find a partner that shares that mindset.
Trust your intuition. Seriously, it has never been wrong. Just start trusting your gut.
Choose joy. Every. Single. Day. It’s the little every day things and experiences that make up our lives. Listen to the music that lights you up, sing even if it’s off key, dance whenever the mood strikes, wear the clothes that make you feel like you, decorate in the style that makes you comfortable, and eat the foods that fuel you. Live authentically and do what brings you joy.
Find your tribe. If you do not jive with someone move on, do not try to fit in where you don’t belong. The friendships we invest in shape our lives.
How other people treat you is a reflection of their internal world more than a reflection on you. Similarly, when you are not showing up in your relationships it’s time to look inward to ask why.
Go on adventures and try something new every chance you get. Get out of your comfort zone. A new exercise, a new art class, a new recipe, anything that expands your life experience. Every experience will teach you something about yourself. You could meet new people who might become part of your tribe or might just discover your new favorite hobby.
Control is an illusion. Be flexible. Go with the flow. Trust the universe.
You are creative. Your fear of failure and judgement leads you to believe that you are not.
Whatever you are not changing you are choosing. Again, YOU are the author of your story. You can decide today what you want the rest of that story to look like and begin making whatever decisions, changes, and steps you need to start living that story. It will not be easy, but it will be so worth it.
